Crime Spree in Sandy Pointe Early Wednesday Morning 10/27

Approximately between 2 AM and 3 AM, Wednesday morning October 27th, at least one individual entered several unlocked vehicles in the neighborhood looking for valuables.  One victim had a $300 camera and a knife set stolen out of his truck, another victim had items out of place in their vehicle, but apparently did not have anything taken.  The 3rd victim is where all the major excitement started.

Mrs. Cory Carrier, the former City Manager also lives in the neighborhood and had left her car unlocked last night in her driveway.  The burglar accidentally tapped the horn while inside her vehicle, which woke up Mr. Don Penton, the former City Mayor and Cory Carrier's husband.  Peeking out the bedroom window, Mr. Penton saw the interior car light on and a profile in the vehicle.  He grabbed his 357 Magnum and headed out the side exit to confront the suspect.  In hindsight he regretted yelling to him before approaching the suspect, giving him a heads up.  The startled suspect began running.  Mr. Penton shot twice at the suspect trying to stop him by hitting him in the legs.  The 2nd bullet was recovered after it hit a neighbor's garage, the first bullet has not been recovered.  The suspect continued running down the street between houses farther into the neighborhood toward the lake.

911 was called at roughly 3:04 AM.  Patrols showed up approximately 7 minutes later and were followed up by 2 helicopters and dogs about 10 minutes after the call was placed.  A hat was lost by the suspect during his retreat which was given to the dogs to track him.  The dogs followed the scent through the back half of the neighborhood between houses and up through the undeveloped lots on the Southwest side of the neighborhood, where the dogs lost the scent.  The suspect is still on the loose as of this morning at 10:30 AM.
Neighbors were interviewed to see if there was any additional information that might help to catch the suspect.

I must admit that a 7 minute response time is pretty good considering the ONE Polk City Police Officer was not on duty last night when it happened.  It was the Polk County Sheriff's Department who responded to the call.  I'm sure the shots fired, and the fact that it was at the former City Mayor's house, didn't hurt matters either.  Did the absence of city patrols last night, due to the drastic cuts in the Polk City Police force, have any direct connection to the occurrence of the crimes?  Maybe or Maybe not, but it sure makes it a lot easier to be nosing around our neighborhoods at night without worrying too much about a police patrol driving up to interrupt all the fun.  I know many neighbors in Sandy Pointe will be looking into taking extra measures to protect their property and insure their safety in the future.  Other Polk City residents would be wise to do the same, since the City can't afford adequate police protection to have regular patrols to deter this type of activity.  The city residents are forced to take their protection into their own hands, since the city is financially not able to.  Polk City residents pay some of the highest tax rates in the state and the city still does not have enough money to provide adequate police protection for its residents.  Maybe the budget cuts should be made somewhere else?  Hopefully, the 357 Magnum scared this individual enough, and others who may be considering doing the same, not to mess with Sandy Pointe again!

  1. I admire the mayor in confronting the intruder however; based on the information provided in the post, I must ask the question, are charges pending against the former mayor?

While protecting your property and life you must still comply with the laws of the State of Florida.

Deadly force was not necessary nor justified in this matter, and in my opinion the reckless discharge of a firearm in a residential neighborhood was not warranted. Serious consequences could have resulted if the bullets had injured other citizens or the intruder himself. While we may live in Polk City, it is not the Wild West. I encourage the former mayor to take a firearms course that will explain the use of force matrix and when/what types of force can be utilized. I am glad this incident and a somewhat happy ending.

  3. You did the right thing Mr. Ex-Mayor. If the city can't protect us. We need to protect ourselves. The idiot that try to break in your car could have easily break in your house. If you park your car outside your house bring in your garage opener. Stay safe Polk City.

  4. ha ha yeah good story and I'm really glad no one was killed or hurt,he took the law into his own hands, not always the thing to do , the person wasn't in his house,so as a previous post said, but then you never know what a criminal has on their mind, and who's going to pay for the stucco repair?

  5. As in every other instance this probably will not get posted as it probably does not support the headhunters in the group, but how about you let the law Enforcement Officials deal with this situation as they are the ones that know the law. Why don't you all spend some time doing something constructive in your community and leave the witch hunt for Halloween.

  6. Feature reference, there is a firearm that you can use that would not in danger your neighbors
it is called The Judge . As for the 7 min. respond time job well d0ne. I commend the bravery of the ex mayor for protecting his property, But this could have turned out very bad for an Innocent neighbor.

  7. Where did the money go for our city? I can see now what is important to our city council. NOT! Why are they brain washed to vote on no protection for the city residents. One Sgt that only does paper work doesn't cut the job. We need deputy's. Wake up Trudy, Joe, Mike, Nancey, oh Don K your the only one that told them they should keep what we had. No excuses for Money over LIFE!!
    Get SOME REAL COUNCIL MEMBERS!!

  8. Can't help but wonder was this a set up by someone to try to prove a point?

It really sounds as if it might have been. Lets look into the "Concerned Citizens" that live in that area and lets be sure it wasn't another one of their ploys to try to get attention because the petition was not done correctly and the facts were incorrect.

  9. Anonymous, why don't you do some investigating of your own before you cry conspiracy theory. I'm sure the Sheriff's Department would be happy to fill you in on the details. I hope you are not a victim yourself in the future. Maybe then you would have a different perspective.

  10. Come on people. Anonymous its really sad that you think (set up and attention) by someone to try and prove a point. This is serious we have a person on the streets that what to rob the people in Polk City. We need to look out for each other. I agree with the previous comments. The ex-mayor and his wife did the right thing. I hope they are doing well and that nothing was taken from their property. I will continue pray for ALL the people in Polk City.

  11. This is not related to the above article, however I think Polk City citizens as well as those of us in the unincorporated area should be aware of the conversation I had with Trudy Block on 10/26/10. I live on Steven Dr. where the TEMORARY Cardinal Hill WWTF is located, I had been informed that Polk City was looking at having the land ( 40-50 acres) that the WWTF is on appraised! I asked Trudy and this is her response: " We HAD it appraised, but we have no plan at this time, we HAD it appraised to be proactive, we will be trying to come up with a plan in the Nov. meetings." Really? Here are a few questions Polk City residence may want to ask their local government...Why would they spend money on an appraisal for a facility that is scheduled to be removed in Feb. 2012? How much of the tax payer’s money did that cost appraisal cost? IF they cannot even meet their current financial obligations, how can the even contemplate the cost to revamp a temporary facility to make it a permanent one? I live on Steven Dr., I was not given a choice as to whether I wanted a sewer plant in my back yard, I can not vote in your city elections yet I feel that I have been just as violated as the citizens of Polk City have been. Those of us who tried to stop Polk City from putting this in back in 2006, were promised that it was a TEMOPRARY fix, now because the city cannot manage their finances, it punishes it residence with exorbitant taxes and continues to make knee-jerk decisions that provide no benefits to anyone. I for one WILL NOT hook up to city utilities if they make
Cardinal Hill permanent, Fine me all you want Polk City, if you can’t pay your bills, why would you expect me too? Isn’t it your job to lead by example?

  12. Did anyone notice no updates are listed on Polk City Sheriff Crime Reports on P. City's web page since June 2009? http://fl-polkcity.civicplus.com/Archive.aspx?AMID=41 Wonder why? No crimes or traffic tickets to report since then?

  13. As strange as it may sound Penton could face charges such as assault with a deadly weapon - reckless discharge of a firearm - reckless endangerment & property damage - perhaps he could use an anger management course.good thing he is a bad shot or someone could have been killed
